Tips to managing face masks

October 26, 2020

This pandemic has impacted all areas of our daily routine.  As we start feeling worn out, is important to recognize the pandemic fatigue but to keep our guard up entering this fall season.  The CDC and health experts agree that face coverings, along with frequent hand washing and social distancing whenever possible, is a key factor in slowing the spread of the coronavirus.

Mask availability and pricing has improved providing for a good opportunity to stock up.  This is particularly important since it’s widely recommended to wash or replace your masks frequently.

Here are some general tips for face mask’s care, especially for parents with kids in day care and/or brick & mortar schools.

Laundry tips.

  • The CDC recommends washing machine or washing by hand. Washing by hand may help extend the life of the mask and avoid those irritating loose fabrics hanging inside or on either side of the nose.
  • Insert mask in a bucket and let them soak first on a 5.25% – 8.25% bleach with temperature water solution (5 tablespoons or 1/33rd cup per gallon of water) for 5 minutes.   Ensure adequate ventilation.  After 5 minutes, discard the bleach solution and rinse the mask thoroughly with water.
  • The CDC recommends that you use the Dryer on the highest heat setting or Air dry. We have developed a two-step process at home where after washing them I let them air dry and then use the clothes steamer to double on any virus (probably not needed but mentally satisfying 😊).  It also helps with wrinkles and maintaining its shape.  You can use an iron too.

How long Coronavirus last on clothes?

  • Research suggest that COVID-19 can remain on some hard surface up to 72 hours.  So far, there is not a lot of evidence of time on fabric and some studies point out that it is hard to spread the virus from your mask, to others.
  • Ideally, you should wear a clean mask every day.  A good idea is to have at least two or more masks. This will reduce the risk and help with “maskne” (acne caused by face mask), and skin irritations issues.

Additional Tips

  • Some mask provides a pocket insert for an activated charcoal, polypropylene, or paper filter.  This is an extra layer that we recommend.  Remove that piece for washing the mask and throw it out following manufacturer’s instructions.
  • When possible, purchase masks with at least three layers which provide best protection from droplets.
  • Most fabric mask are reusable.  However, if you use “surgical” mask, is best to discard them after use since they are not washable.
  • Follow proper guidance on wearing and removing mask avoiding unnecessary handling.
